Angela Udongwo’s Radiant Impact in Black Patient Radiology 🌟
In a profession where Black representation remains dismally low – with only 3% of radiologists being Black (AMA, 2021) – Angela Udongwo, a third-year medical student at Temple University in Philadelphia, is leading a revolution to ensure inclusivity and innovation in STEM, particularly for Black women.Â
Angela’s groundbreaking research, crafted in collaboration with mentor Hillel Maresky, confronts a critical issue in healthcare: the cultural competence gap in radiology, especially concerning Black patients. With precision, she’s delving into accurately interpreting X-rays for Black individuals adorned with braids, twists, and locs, forging a path toward breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity in a field starved for diversity.Â
Angela’s journey epitomizes the profound impact of representation in STEM, particularly for Black women. Angela understands intimately the power of diverse voices in healthcare. By shining a spotlight on the nuances of interpreting X-rays for Black patients with diverse hairstyles, Angela not only fills a critical gap in medical knowledge but also advocates for broader cultural competence. Representation matters – it shapes patient experiences and drives practitioner understanding, particularly in communities historically marginalized and underserved.
