In July 2020, Self-eSTEM launched its Virtual STEM Exploration Camp, a bold response to the shift in education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Partnering with UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design, Lyft, and Kai XR, this week-long program welcomed over 125 girls into the world of smart cities, environmental design, and immersive technology. From mapping neighborhoods to coding virtual reality experiences, this camp wasn’t just about exposure it was about empowerment!
Each day, campers explored STEM through real-world challenges and culturally relevant learning. Participants tackled projects focused on COVID-19’s impact on transportation, city design, and public spaces.
Girls used Kai XR’s VR platform to reimagine their communities and learned about autonomous vehicles and micro-mobility from Lyft professionals. These sessions made the future of STEM tangible and inclusive. Throughout the week, participants engaged in hands-on activities such as designing and coding virtual reality (VR) experiences to address COVID-19 challenges in transportation and social spaces.
The week wrapped up with a Close Out Celebration featuring student presentations and a keynote from Tsu-Jae King Liu, Ph.D., Dean of UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering. Her presence affirmed the importance of young women in STEM.
