Self-eSTEM’s story was recently spotlighted in an inspiring interview on Bay Area Focus with host Tinka Blackmond, featuring our founder and executive director, Adamaka Ajaelo. The segment explored the “why” behind Self-eSTEM and the journey of turning a vision into a movement.
Adamaka opened up about her personal story, including the barriers she faced as a Black woman entering the STEM field, and how those experiences fueled her passion to launch Self-eSTEM in 2014. Her mission? To increase access to STEM education, leadership development, and real-world technical skills for girls from underrepresented communities. During the interview, she highlighted Self-eSTEM’s core programs like our one-week summer camp, weekend STEM club, and after-school FIRST Robotics program! The conversation also covered key milestones, including partnerships with leading tech organizations, media features, and the hundreds of scholars we’ve served and mentored across the Bay Area.
