Selma joined Self-eSTEM in 2017 at just 12 years old. What started as curiosity soon turned into a space where she could grow her confidence, discover her talents, and dream bigger for her future.
“When my journey through Self-eSTEM began, I never imagined it would inspire me to start my own business one day. And when that happens, the first place I’ll look for talent is Self-eSTEM, because I know the girls here are adaptable, organized, and deeply committed.”
Selma’s words reflect a powerful truth: when girls of color are given opportunities to lead, they don’t just grow; they create pathways for others. Through hands-on experiences and mentorship, Selma explored how STEM could be a force for good. “The opportunity to have the internship through Self-eSTEM has been so valuable,” she shared. “I’ve gotten to apply the things I enjoy about STEM into a good cause and use my skills to help progress something.”
Her journey wasn’t just about personal growth, it was about lifting others. Selma stepped into mentorship, encouraging younger girls to think about college, explore their options, and envision the lives they want to create. As she puts it: “Self-eSTEM has empowered me to mentor younger girls and tell them, hey, you can go to college, start thinking about these schools, even if you’re not applying for a couple of years.”
Today, Selma is a college student at Howard University and serves as a Marketing Intern with Self-eSTEM. She’s living proof of how early exposure and consistent support transform lives and she’s already planning to build a future that empowers others.
