“I thought that STEM was for a certain demographic of people—particularly males who worked in business or finance. I didn’t think that Black girls, or anyone like me, could really be a part of STEM. But then, through Self-eSTEM, I discovered creativity, collaboration, and community. That changed everything.”
Through the years, Azaria has grown into a thoughtful and passionate leader. “It’s touching because it feels like somebody really cares,” she shared. “Self-eSTEM is about lifting us up, helping us shine, and showing that exposure alone can change a situation for so many people.”
One moment that stood out for her was connecting fashion and technology, a creative project that helped her see herself in STEM for the first time. “It was so powerful because there was so much creativity involved that I didn’t know could be a part of STEM,” she said. That spark of discovery inspired her to take an AP Computer Science class back home in Los Angeles, bringing her Self-eSTEM experiences into her school life and future ambitions.
Even after moving to Southern California, Azaria remains dedicated to the community that shaped her. This year, after missing signups to attend camp, she reached out to see how she could still be involved and joined as a Junior Facilitator, helping younger girls find their own voices in STEM.
Today, Azaria continues to grow as both a learner and a leader, balancing high school in Los Angeles with her continued commitment to Self-eSTEM. She travels back each summer to give back to the program that helped her believe she belongs in STEM.
