Before Kiera officially joined Self-eSTEM, she had already been around the community for years. Her aunt Alanna, a longtime volunteer and former board member, often brought her along to events when she was younger. Kiera remembers being just five years old and counting down until she would finally be old enough to participate herself.
Once she joined at age seven, Kiera quickly discovered how engaging and impactful the program could be. “This program has made me more college and career ready by improving my thinking and solving skills,” she shared. The collaborative environment and hands-on projects helped her develop skills she now uses both inside and outside the classroom. “I enjoy working in groups and collaborating with others to create something meaningful. Being part of this program helps me grow personally and academically while building real-world skills.”
Over the years, Kiera continued returning to programs like the STEM Exploration Camp, where she expanded her interests and confidence in STEM. Her learning recently extended into emerging technologies through Self-eSTEM’s Digital and Generative AI Bootcamp in 2024, where she gained a deeper understanding of how to use AI tools effectively. “Before, I thought AI gave bad answers,” she explained. “But after learning how to ask better questions and use it correctly, I realized it works so much better.”
Despite living in Southern California, Kiera’s family prioritizes making the trip to the Bay Area each summer so she can participate in camp and continue growing with the Self-eSTEM community. Her journey reflects what happens when curiosity is nurtured over time, turning early excitement into meaningful skills, confidence, and a belief that STEM can shape her future.
