When Emilia attended her first Self-eSTEM event, she was curious about design, coding, and creativity. What she didn’t yet realize was how much her understanding of STEM would expand. “I learned that STEM is a lot more than what I once thought it was, it can actually be fun and can challenge you,” she shared. “You can learn something new every day and form a community… something that I could actually pursue and enjoy! All thanks to Self-eSTEM!”
Even during the pandemic, Emilia stayed connected through virtual programming like STEM Power Hour. She eagerly completed experiment kits at home, including a stress-relief research project where she conducted pre-and post-tests with family members and proudly presented her findings. Those experiences strengthened her confidence in problem-solving, public speaking, and critical thinking.
Over the years, she continued attending camps and workshops, building both friendships and self-assurance. “Last year I went to camp without knowing anyone and I made friends,” she said. “I felt welcomed and I had a lot of fun.” Through coding, creative experimentation, and collaboration with other girls, Emilia found both belonging and inspiration. “I like to learn about coding and video games… I like to be creative and experiment with things and having the help to learn more about it from the volunteers.”
That confidence has extended beyond Self-eSTEM. Her parent shared that two of Emilia’s math assessments were selected to be shown at a school Open House as examples of student thinking and strategy. “We were super proud and it really helped her with her self-confidence around math.” Once a child who simply dreamed of becoming a scientist, Emilia now sees women of color in STEM roles and knows that pathway is real and attainable.
Now 14, Emilia continues to thrive academically while balancing competitive soccer and musical theater. As she enters a new stage of her academic journey, she carries with her the confidence, representation, and community that Self-eSTEM helped cultivate. Her story is a reminder that when young girls are given space to explore, experiment, and be seen, their belief in themselves grows right alongside their skills.
Your support fuels the confidence, curiosity, and leadership of youth who are often overlooked in traditional educational spaces.
