When Amela first joined Self-eSTEM in 2023, she was excited to learn but still finding her voice. Like many young innovators, she entered the program with curiosity and creativity, while quietly observing the space around her.
That began to change as she participated in hands-on workshops, STEM camps, and the Robotics Program. Amela describes Self-eSTEM as “interactive,” explaining that when you walk into the room, “you can be yourself and interact with the innovators and other people like the volunteers.” The opportunity to learn alongside peers, mentors, and facilitators helped her feel comfortable speaking up, collaborating, and trying new things.
Representation also played a powerful role in her growth. “When I walk into a room and I see a woman of color, it makes me feel comfortable,” Amela shared. “It means I can be myself around them.” Seeing leaders who looked like her reinforced that STEM spaces could be places where she belonged.
One of Amela’s favorite experiences was building a robot from scratch, taking individual parts and working with her team to create something new. That confidence carried forward from the 2025 Digital and Generative AI Program, where Amela and her team earned 3rd place in the Spring Innovator Showcase, a milestone that reflected both her technical growth and teamwork.
Today, Amela continues as an active Self-eSTEM Innovator, showing noticeable growth in confidence and assertiveness. As her parent shared, “I really do see a significant increase in Amela’s STEM/tech abilities, confidence, and assertiveness.” Her journey is still unfolding, but her progress already reflects the impact of consistent support, representation, and access to meaningful STEM experiences.
