At Self-eSTEM, we believe in lifting as we climb, reinvesting in the next generation so young people can see themselves as capable, confident and belonging in STEM.
This Women’s History Month, we’re inviting our community to volunteer 1-3 hours during our in-person group interviews on Saturday, March 14 in Oakland, CA, for youth ages 7-17 applying for our Early STEM Immersion (ESI) program.
Our group interviews are not auditions or selection panels. They are short, collaborative experiences that mirror how young people learn and work together during our programs. By meeting students before our program begins, we can thoughtfully place them into cohorts, prepare facilitators with the right supports, and maximize learning time from day one.
In short: less time adjusting, more time learning.
We’re seeking volunteers to serve as activity interviewers or observers during at least one, 60 minute interview block running between 11:00am-2:00pm on March 14. Volunteers should plan to arrive about 10 minutes before their scheduled block.
As a volunteer, you are not evaluating youth. You’re helping create a welcoming space where young people can collaborate, try new things and be recognized for their curiosity, persistence and potential, not prior access to STEM.
Food and refreshment will be provided.
All volunteers must attend a brief virtual training to ensure a consistent, equitable experience.
Expanding opportunity for girls and youth from under-resourced backgrounds takes community. When women and allies show up, young people see what’s possible. This is what it looks like to lift as we climb.
